A jump for joy as the five-year CarbOcean project is officially launched today! The project has now entered phase 1 : the development of an autonomous optical device to detect particulate inorganic carbon, or PIC, in the oceanic environment. The instrument is a polarized beam transmissometer that is capable of detecting small changes in the polarization state of scattered light induced by the birefringence of PIC, composed of biomineral calcite and aragonite produced by some planktonic organisms (see below). |
