the coming of the Marsens laboratory

13/12/2023

An unused room was identified in January 2023 and assigned to the Marine Optics and Remote Sensing Team (MarSens) of UGent in March 2023. Since summer 2023 the room underwent beautiful transformations and is now finally ready as the "MarSens laboratory room"! Qiming and Jordan are setting it up for the next series of CarbOcean experiments!

welcome Rafael!

CarbOcean welcomes a new team member: postdoctoral researcher Rafael Rasse, from Venezuela!
Rafael is a chemical oceanographer holding a PhD degree in Chemistry - Earth Science from IVIC Venezuela and a Postgraduate certificate in Ocean Observatories from BIOS Bermuda. He was previously awarded the Newton International Postdoctoral Fellowship of the UK Royal Society and an H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship at Sorbonne University to work on carbon fluxes and biogeochemical feedbacks in the ocean's oxygen minimum zones. To achieve this, Rafael has developed bio-optical algorithms and exploited observations from BioGeoChemical-Argo floats and satellite platforms.
In CarbOcean, Rafael will exploit the global fleet of BioGeoChemical-Argo floats and remote sensing to
study spatial-temporal variations in fluxes of particulate carbon in the main oceanic basins impacted by coccolithophore blooms.

Griet Neukermans is happy to join the international BioGeoChemical-Argo Technology Task Team to provide technical expertise on current and future BGC-Argo sensors and advance the international Argo program.
Its goals include assessing the performance of approved sensors, fostering sensor diversification and innovation, and facilitating community discussions on BGC-Argo sensor technologies.

twilight zone symposium on the biological carbon pump

The JETZON UN Ocean Decade Program is organizing a symposium on the Biological carbon pump in the Ocean Twilight Zone at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Boston, USA) from September 18-21, 2023.
At this symposium, preliminary results of the JETZON Biological Carbon Pump (BCP) benchmark initiative, launched earlier this year, will be presented. The BCP benchmark initiative aims to come up with numbers and uncertainties on the different components of the BCP to set out an authoritative benchmark to provide a key reference for both future change and for discussions around marine Carbon Dioxide Removal.
The BCP was divided into five aspects, each with its own working group, lead and mentor:
  • WG1 Gravitational component – Chloe Baumas (lead), Dave Siegel (mentor)
  • WG2 Mixing component – Mat Dever (lead), Philip Boyd (mentor)
  • WG3 Organism migration – Svenja Halfter (lead), Debbie Steinberg (mentor)
  • WG4 Biogeochemical constraint – Jamie Wilson (lead), Carol Robinson (mentor)
  •  WG5 Carbonate Pump – Griet Neukermans (lead), Luc Beaufort (mentor)
Griet and Jordan will be presenting on behalf of WG 5 their work on the carbonate pump on Tuesday 19 September.
